Chun Shan (Sandie) Yi
Bio
Chun Shan (Sandie) Yi creates wearable art, including garments, accessories, and footwear. Her work centers on themes of body reconfiguration as she draws upon the lived experiences of disabled bodies and medical and surgical interventions. She alters the purpose of prosthetics and orthotics with the intention of establishing a work that opens doors to new terrains through physical comfort and self-defined aesthetics. Each piece is made with consideration to the wearer's individual medical experience, physical body, and mental state. Yi serves as model for much of her work. She received her BFA and MA at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her MFA at the University of California Berkley. Yi is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Disability Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Image Descriptions

"Re-fuse Skin Set" Description: This photograph features a person's body captured from the mid-thigh to the mid-torso. The individual wears beige shorts designed to look like a layer of dermis. The garment has two oblong holes, each one in approximately the place where the figures hip bones would be. The holes are lined with a thick, gooey-looking, white paint. The figures arms are crossed at the wrists. On each hand, the firgure has two fingers. Between the fingers on each hand is a triangle of the same beige fabric used to make the shorts. The fabric creates the illusion of finger webbing. On the portions of the fabric that is closest to the figure's fingers is black stitching. On the figure's fingers and the side of their hand is more of the white, gooey paint.

"Armed & Beautiful" Description: This photograph shows two legs with sandals on the feet. The background of the image is black. The sandals feature a thick platform and black straps that cross. The individual wearing the shows has two toes on each foot. Both sandals feature large, curved horns protruding from between the figure's toes.
