Laura Swanson

Bio

Laura Swanson is an artist who uses photography, sculpture, and installation to explore themes of identity and physical differences. Much of Swanson's work conceals her identity and plays with depictions of her short stature. She received her BFA from the San Fransisco Art Institute and her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her work has been exhibited nationally at galleries and museums including at the Laurie M. Tisch Gallery, the RISD Museum of Art, Camera Club of New York, San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery, and Socrates Sculpture Park. She has also exhibited in Warsaw, Berlin, and South Korea. Swanson has also received numerous awards and fellowships.

"Pillow" Description: This photograph contains a bed with a tan leather headboard and white blankets and sheets. On the right side of the photo is a side table which holds a lamp. Seated on the bed is a figure holding a pillow in a red and white gingham pillowcase. The pillow conceals the figure in its entirety, with the exception of two feet sticking out from the bottom of the pillow and two arms wrapped around the sides of the pillow.

"Street Clocks" Description: This photograph shows two clocks. The clocks are positioned in a park. The photograph appears to have been taken at night. There are leaves on the ground although there are also leaves on the trees behind the clocks making it difficult the time of year the photo was taken. The two clocks are identical, with the exception of their heights. The clock on the left is approximately half the height of the clock on the right. Both clocks are black with white faces and black Roman numerals. Both clocks read 10:03. At the top of each clock is a sign that reads "New York."

"Uniforms" Description: This photograph is of an art gallery. Seven floating platforms can be seen protruding from the back wall. They are in a line horizontally, hovering about one foot off the ground. On each platform is a small mannequin wearing a unique outfit. From left to right, the mannequins are dressed in a beekeeper's outfit, a burqa, a plague doctor's outfit, a victorian cape dress, a funeral dress and veil, a fencer's outfit, and a welder's outfit.
